What an outdoor-rated cabinet actually is

It is worth being precise about this, because the phrase weather-rated leads people to picture a sealed box and that is not what it is. An outdoor unit has a louvred, drained enclosure designed to admit combustion air freely while shedding rain and directing any water that does get in back out of the bottom. The burner breathes ambient air, the exhaust leaves through a hooded outlet in the top or front of the cabinet, and the cabinet itself is therefore the vent termination. The internal freeze protection is a set of small electric heaters plus, on some models, a circulating element that keeps water moving through the exchanger. It takes about five minutes once you have done it, and the whole point of positioning the isolation valves thoughtfully during the installation is to keep it that short.

  1. Decide whether it is warranted

    The trigger is not cold alone, it is cold plus a credible loss of power. A hard freeze with the grid up is what the unit's own heaters are for. A forecast in the teens combined with an active conservation appeal or a storm bringing ice onto the lines is the situation where draining is the sensible call.

  2. Kill the gas and the power

    Close the gas cock at the unit and switch off the breaker feeding it. A unit that fires with no water in the exchanger is a unit with a damaged exchanger, and this is the step that prevents it.

  3. Close both isolation valves

    Cold inlet and hot outlet. This separates the exposed section from the house so you are draining the unit and its exterior piping, not the whole plumbing system.

  4. Open the drain ports and break the vacuum

    Open the hose-bib drain on the cold side first, then the hot side. Water will only run out properly once air can get in, so open the hot port to atmosphere as well. On most units there is also a small internal drain plug that should come out.

  5. Open a fixture inside the house

    One hot tap left cracked open relieves any residual pressure in the branch and gives you a clear signal when the system is dry.

  6. Leave it open and leave it off

Insulation delays freezing, it does not prevent it

This distinction matters and it is regularly misunderstood. Pipe insulation is a thermal resistance, not a heat source. Water in an insulated pipe surrounded by 15 degree air still ends up at 15 degrees; the insulation only controls how long that takes.
