The annual clock is set by combustion, not only by scale

Descaling gets the attention because the water here demands it, but if scale were the only concern then a softened house could reasonably go two or three years between visits. It cannot, and the reason is that the combustion side of the appliance degrades on its own schedule, entirely independently of water chemistry. The flame rod proves that combustion is actually happening by passing a small rectified current through the flame itself. Flame rectification
A flame conducts electricity, and because the burner surface and the sensing rod have very different areas, it conducts far better in one direction than the other. The control board applies alternating current to the rod and measures the small direct current that comes back — commonly a minimum in the region of one to two microamps, with a healthy burner reading several times that. Anything that interferes with the circuit, including oxide on the rod, a corroded ground path or reversed line polarity at the receptacle, reduces the signal without producing any visible symptom.

Two of these deserve a note. Igniter gap is a dimensional specification, not a judgement call — it is on the order of a few millimetres and it is in the service manual, and an eroded electrode widens it gradually until the spark can no longer bridge reliably in a moving air stream. And the fan is the component people never suspect, because it usually still spins. A dust-loaded impeller moves less air than a clean one at the same speed, which shifts the air-fuel ratio without ever producing a hard fault until it does.

Outside the cabinet: vent, intake and condensate

That fluid passes through a trap, which needs a water seal to stop flue gas taking the same route, and through a neutralizer cartridge holding limestone or magnesium oxide media that is consumed as it does its job.
