Most tankless units are designed as tankless units, and the retrofit problems are yours to solve. The EZ series was designed backward from the retrofit. The premise is that a homeowner replacing a 40 or 50 gallon gas tank should not have to also pay for a new gas branch and a new vent route just to get on-demand hot water.
In practice that means the EZ tank-replacement models are engineered to work within the constraints a tank leaves behind, including the existing metal flue and, within limits, the existing gas line. Whether that actually holds in your house is a question of measurement, not marketing. Noritz is not only a retrofit brand. The condensing NRC-class units compete directly on efficiency with anything else on the market and vent in plastic like any other condensing unit. Above that, the commercial lineup manifolds multiple units into a single controlled system with staged firing, which is the right answer for a restaurant off Preston Road, a salon, a small hotel, or a multifamily building in Collin County that needs far more than one residential unit can produce. Staged systems also give you something a single large heater never will: if one module drops out, the building still has hot water.
Sizing here works like it does for every brand. Frisco winter inlet water sits near 50-55F, so a 105F shower needs roughly a 55F rise, and a high-output residential unit produces around 5.5-6 GPM at that rise. The EZ tank-replacement models are deliberately sized to match what the tank they replace actually delivered, which is a more honest comparison than most homeowners get. If your 50 gallon tank was already marginal for the household, replacing it with an equivalent-capacity tankless will be marginal too, and we will recommend a larger unit rather than let you find that out in January.
